During pregnancy, physiological changes occur to meet the needs of the developing fetus and prepare the mother for childbirth. Some of these changes may influence laboratory reference values and mimic biological profiles associated with certain diseases. It is therefore essential to distinguish normal physiological changes from changes caused by the presence of pathology. Under the auspices of the French Society of Clinical Biology (SFBC), the BIOMAT Working Group was created with two main objectives: to identify the measurement methods that can be used during pregnancy and to propose reference values for different assays of vitamins and trace elements in pregnant women (who have not undergone bariatric surgery). This article is divided into two parts: the first part detail the main physiological changes in organs, metabolism, hematology and hormones during pregnancy. Then, a second part will be devoted to known data concerning certain biological parameters, with emphasis on certain micronutrients and vitamins presenting a risk in the case of a deficiency.
