Summary

Short-term preoperative urinary catheter use may reduce urethral stricture risk after transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P). This retrospective study found a lower stricture rate in patients who had a catheter before surgery.

Background:

  • Postoperative urethral stricture is a complication following transurethral resection of the prostate (TUR-P).
  • The role of preoperative urinary catheterization in preventing this complication is not well-established.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between short-term preoperative urinary catheter use and the incidence of postoperative urethral stricture in patients undergoing TUR-P.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 150 patients who underwent monopolar TUR-P.
  • Patients were categorized into two groups: with and without preoperative urethral catheterization.
  • Urethral stricture diagnosis confirmed via clinical assessment, urethrography, and cystoscopy.

Main Results:

  • The overall urethral stricture rate was 8.7%.
  • Patients with preoperative catheterization had a significantly lower stricture rate (2.9%) compared to those without (13.6%) (p=0.020).
  • No correlation found between catheter duration and stricture development; hypertension showed an inverse association.

Conclusions:

  • Short-term preoperative urethral catheterization may be linked to a reduced risk of postoperative urethral stricture after TUR-P.
  • The retrospective nature of this study precludes definitive causal conclusions.
  • Further prospective research is warranted to confirm these findings.
