Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of two intrapleural applications of single-use bronchoscopes in a cadaveric model.

  • Approach 1: Utilized a 2.7 mm bronchoscope as a visual stylet within a 20-Fr trocar catheter for pleural entry and drain-tip confirmation.
  • Approach 2: Employed a 5.0 mm bronchoscope as a flexible thoracoscope for limited pleural inspection, aspiration, and biopsy.

Main Results:

  • Approach 1 was feasible in six hemithoraces across three cadavers.
  • Approach 2 was feasible in four hemithoraces; it was not attempted in two due to time and a persistent air leak after Approach 1.
  • No new persistent air leaks were observed after Approach 2.

Conclusions:

  • The studied intrapleural applications of single-use bronchoscopes are feasible in a cadaveric setting.
  • These techniques may complement existing methods for intrathoracic visualization.
  • Further clinical validation is warranted to assess their utility in patient care.
