Biogenic amine biosynthesis in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha L

Abstract:
This study reports the first detection of histamine in the liverwort Marchantia polymorpha L., which was found exclusively in explants cultured in vitro. Using UHPLC-ESI-QqQ-MS/MS analysis, we qualitatively determined the presence of four neuroactive biogenic amines - tyramine, tryptamine, dopamine, and histamine - in the samples collected in natural habitats and cultivated under controlled laboratory conditions. Tyramine, tryptamine, and dopamine were consistently detected in both types of samples, suggesting their constitutive biosynthesis in M. polymorpha. On the contrary, histamine was absent or below the detection limit in natural samples, suggesting that its production depends on the physiological state of the organism and may be induced by specific factors associated with tissue culture.
