Main Methods:
- Rattan particles were treated with furfuryl alcohol (FA) via immersion for 24 hours.
- Particleboards (300 × 300 × 10 mm) were fabricated using FA-modified rattan and bonded with PF, MF, or UF adhesives (12% resin content).
- Boards were hot-pressed under controlled conditions and conditioned for 14 days before mechanical and physical property testing.
Main Results:
- Furfurylation significantly improved dimensional stability, reducing moisture content, water absorption, thickness swelling, and leaching (43.25%–71.06% anti-swelling efficiency).
- Internal bonding strength, hardness, and screw holding power were enhanced, while modulus of elasticity showed limited change and modulus of rupture sometimes decreased.
- Melamine formaldehyde (MF) bonded boards demonstrated the most balanced mechanical performance; furfurylation resulted in darker, more uniform surfaces.

- Furfuryl alcohol modification effectively enhances the dimensional stability and some mechanical properties of rattan particleboards.
- The choice of adhesive system influences the overall performance, with MF offering balanced properties.
- Furfurylated rattan particleboards are suitable for non-structural and decorative applications, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional wood panels.
