Background:

Numerous single-puncture arthrocentesis (SPA) techniques exist, causing heterogeneity and limiting procedure comparability.
This review aims to systematically classify published SPA techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

To review and classify the various single-puncture arthrocentesis (SPA) techniques described in the literature.

Main Methods:

A comprehensive literature review was performed using MEDLINE.
Studies were included if they referenced SPA, and full-text articles describing the SPA method were selected.

Main Results:

Thirty-three articles involving 864 patients and 611 SPA procedures were analyzed.
Techniques were categorized into four types: single device-simple flow, single device-double flow, welded devices, and concentric devices.
While some studies reported reduced pain and improved mouth opening, no technique superiority was demonstrated; welded and concentric devices were perceived as easier to use.

Conclusions:

Currently, no significant differences have been established between various single-puncture arthrocentesis (SPA) techniques.
This classification may facilitate the design of future comparative studies for better SPA technique assessment.
