The role of chitosan-based nano systems in emerging vaccine technologies: current status and future expectations

Abstract:
The multifunctional potential of chitosan, which is a natural biopolymer derived from chitin, in the field of vaccine formulation will be explored in this review. Firstly, how this unique chemically versatile structure of chitosan allows scientists to tailor nano systems that precisely control the delivery and protection of chemical and biological molecules will be highlighted, and consequently how it enhances the efficacy and safety of the drugs and vaccines will be explained. Specifically, the role of chitosan-based nano systems that are designed as vaccine adjuvant/delivery systems in effective transport of antigens while stimulating a stronger immune response against the pathogens will be emphasized. By examining current applications of these systems against infectious diseases, both the technical successes and the regulatory hurdles facing clinical implementation will be discussed. Finally, a comprehensive overview will be provided on how chitosan-based nano systems for vaccines can offer effective immunization strategies in the future with improved safety, efficacy, and protection.
