Background:

Impulsivity and compulsivity are key features of behavioral addictions.
Understanding their differential associations is crucial for targeted interventions.
Gambling disorder and problematic video gaming share some, but not all, underlying mechanisms.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate how specific dimensions of impulsivity relate to compulsivity in gambling versus video gaming.
To identify potential disorder-specific psychological mechanisms in behavioral addictions.
To inform diagnostic criteria and treatment strategies for these conditions.

Main Methods:

Assessed 295 Ecuadorian adults (165 video gamers, 130 gamblers) using the UPPS-P Impulsive Behaviour Scale and GRACC-18 Compulsivity Assessment Questionnaire.
Employed regression analyses to examine associations between five impulsivity dimensions and compulsivity.
Compared these associations across the distinct groups of video gamers and gamblers.

Main Results:

Executive dysfunction and positive-affect urgency were more strongly linked to gambling compulsivity.
Negative urgency and maladaptive distress regulation were more prominent in video gaming compulsivity.
Distinct impulsivity-compulsivity links suggest unique pathways for each behavioral addiction.

Conclusions:

The findings highlight disorder-specific roles of impulsivity dimensions in gambling and video gaming.
Current assumptions about impulsivity in behavioral addictions may need re-evaluation.
Tailored interventions based on individual emotional and cognitive profiles are recommended.
