Abstract:
Imidacloprid, a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide, plays a significant role in modern agriculture due to its effectiveness against pest species. However, concerns regarding its environmental persistence and potential ecological impacts highlight the importance of understanding its effects on beneficial insects, which are vital for maintaining healthy ecosystems. Insects such as pollinators, decomposers, and natural pest controllers contribute to biodiversity, crop productivity, and nutrient cycling. The widespread use of imidacloprid can adversely affect these nontarget insect populations, leading to declines in pollination services and disrupting ecological balance. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the chemical properties of imidacloprid, its application practices, and the various pathways through which it disperses, degrades, and transforms in the environment. Emphasis is placed on biotic and abiotic transformation mechanisms, influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, pH, and organic matter content. The formation of metabolites and their environmental persistence and toxicity are also discussed. Furthermore, the review explores the potential risks to nontarget organisms, groundwater, and overall ecosystem health, alongside analytical methods for monitoring imidacloprid and its degradation products. Finally, strategies for mitigating environmental impacts, including best management practices and regulatory considerations, are examined to inform sustainable use and environmental safety.
