Endoscopic laryngopharyngeal surgery for a retropharyngeal schwannoma

Retropharyngeal schwannomas are exceptionally rare. We report the successful use of endoscopic laryngopharyngeal surgery (ELPS) for complete resection of a retropharyngeal schwannoma in a mid-60s woman presenting with persistent pharyngeal discomfort. Imaging revealed a well-circumscribed 20 mm tumour in the retropharyngeal space. ELPS allowed en bloc excision under direct visualisation with no postoperative complications. Histopathology confirmed Antoni A-type schwannoma. At 14 months of follow-up, no recurrence has been observed. This case demonstrates that ELPS can be a minimally invasive and effective option for selected retropharyngeal tumours.
