Abstract:
Digital transformation in hospitals can only succeed when IT projects and investments are strategically aligned with organizational goals and the hospital's specific critical success factors. This qualitative study combines a systematic literature search with expert interviews in 15 German hospitals to identify strategic Critical Success Factors (CSFs) for digital transformation projects. Seven factors with 19 differentiated forms emerged across leadership, culture, stakeholder engagement, competencies, resources and infrastructure, external conditions, and path dependency. Synthesized into an Implementation Research Logic Model (IRLM) structure, these interdependent strategic CSFs reveal specific governance mechanisms that hospital managers and political decision-makers can use to strengthen the strategic direction and achieve a sustainable transformation.
