Interventions to improve interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) in hospital teams vary widely in their development, delivery, and evaluation. This review describes how successful IPCP interventions have been developed, the nature and delivery of these interventions, and the outcomes used to evaluate them. Databases were searched in January 2023 and September 2024. Studies were included if they reported at least one objective quantitative outcome demonstrating improved IPCP in existing interprofessional hospital teams. From 12,754 records, 73 studies met eligibility criteria. Twenty-three percent of studies were controlled trials, with the remainder using quasi-experimental designs. Study quality and reporting completeness varied substantially. Only 35% of studies reported an assessment of local team needs prior to intervention implementation. Most interventions involved training, often delivered over multiple sessions, with fewer studies examining tools or organizational change. Outcomes most commonly assessed team functioning and performance, while patient outcomes were less frequently reported, and 40% of studies used validated measures. Overall, IPCP interventions were not consistently developed using structured needs assessment or codesign approaches, and reporting of development and implementation processes was often limited. These gaps constrain understanding of context and limit transferability. Greater emphasis on needs-based, codesigned interventions and clearer reporting is recommended.
