Bone Healing and Skeletal Stability Following Orthognathic Surgery in Fibrous Dysplasia

Abstract:
Fibrous dysplasia represents a challenge for orthognathic surgery due to the altered anatomy that generates significant asymmetries. In addition, skeletal instability and uncertainty about postoperative bone healing due to the lack of stability of the osteosynthetic material generate great concern in these cases. The authors present the case of a patient who underwent corrective orthognathic surgery. Clinical and radiographic follow-up lasted 2 years. The results showed adequate healing and maintained skeletal stability. This suggests that this procedure may be a safe and effective option for patients with fibrous dysplasia; however, more publications are required due to the limited existing literature.
