The variable-loop circular catheter (VLCC) shows promising 12-month effectiveness and safety in Chinese patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). This study confirms the VLCC

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Electrophysiology
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Limited data exists on the variable-loop circular catheter (VLCC) in Asian populations.
  • The afIRE trial investigated the VLCC in Chinese patients with symptomatic, drug-refractory paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the 12-month safety and effectiveness of the VLCC in Chinese patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF).

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, multicenter, single-arm trial (afIRE) involving adults undergoing first-time pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) with the VLCC.
  • Primary effectiveness endpoint was 12-month freedom from atrial arrhythmia recurrence, repeat ablation, procedural failure, or antiarrhythmic drug use.
  • Safety was evaluated by the incidence of primary adverse events (PAEs).

Main Results:

  • 123 patients (mean age 57.0 years) were included in the main analysis.
  • 12-month effectiveness success was 74.8%, with 87.0% freedom from symptomatic recurrence.
  • The safety profile was favorable, with a 1.6% incidence of primary adverse events (PAEs), primarily vascular complications.

Conclusions:

  • The afIRE trial demonstrates favorable 12-month effectiveness and excellent safety of the VLCC in Asian patients.
  • These findings reinforce the reproducibility of VLCC outcomes across diverse global atrial fibrillation (AF) populations.
