Summary

Background:

  • Sustained adherence to disease-modifying therapies is crucial for managing relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS).
  • Psychological distress is linked to poor adherence, but the role of psychological resilience is not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if psychological resilience independently predicts medication adherence (MA) in people with RRMS.
  • To assess resilience's association with MA after controlling for distress, quality of life (QoL), and disability.

Main Methods:

  • 165 people with RRMS in remission were studied.
  • Medication adherence was measured using the Medication Adherence Report Scale.
  • Resilience, distress, coping, QoL, and disability (EDSS) were assessed using validated scales. Multivariate logistic regression was employed.

Main Results:

  • Participants with good adherence reported significantly higher resilience and better QoL.
  • Adherence positively correlated with resilience and negatively with psychological distress.
  • Psychological resilience emerged as the sole independent predictor of good adherence (p=.016).

Conclusions:

  • Psychological resilience is a vital resource for sustained treatment adherence in RRMS.
  • Resilience supports adherence independently of distress, disability, or QoL.
  • Clinical practices could benefit from resilience screening and enhancement strategies to improve patient outcomes.
