    Background:

    • Sleep disorders are common and varied in persons with multiple sclerosis (PwMS), yet often overlooked compared to motor symptoms.
    • Understanding and managing sleep disturbances is crucial for improving the overall well-being of PwMS.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of sleep disorders in PwMS.
    • To identify symptoms that predict sleep problems such as poor sleep quality, insomnia, and excessive daytime sleepiness.

    Main Methods:

    • A cross-sectional study involving 136 PwMS.
    • Utilized validated questionnaires including the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Insomnia Severity Index, and Epworth Sleepiness Scale.
    • Employed statistical analyses such as ANOVA, t-tests, Pearson correlation, and multiple regression.

    Main Results:

    • Over half of PwMS (51.5%) reported poor sleep quality, with significant rates of insomnia (36.8%) and excessive daytime sleepiness (24.3%).
    • Forgetfulness, depression, pain, and nocturnal urinary frequency were significant predictors of poor sleep quality.
    • Depression and pain predicted insomnia, while fatigue and anxiety predicted excessive daytime sleepiness.

    Conclusions:

    • Sleep disorders manifest early in multiple sclerosis and are influenced by specific symptoms.
    • Healthcare professionals, including nurses and interdisciplinary teams, should proactively assess sleep disorders in PwMS from the early disease stages.
    • Interventions targeting predictive symptoms are essential for mitigating sleep disturbances in this population.
