Abstract:
Despite advances in percutaneous coronary intervention and expansion in cardiac critical care, randomized controlled trials investigating mechanical circulatory support in acute myocardial infarction complicated by cardiogenic shock (AMI-CS) have shown inconsistent results. These studies are limited by sample size, heterogeneity in patient selection, variability in intervention timing, and inconsistent definitions and staging of shock severity. Current evidence, in general, provides limited guidance on optimal device choice and timing. Ongoing future trials with the addition of next-generation percutaneous devices alongside early hemodynamic-guided intervention may provide clarity of effective and safe treatment of patients with AMI-CS.
