Pragmatic measures for school-based research and practice: Best practices and future directions

The special issue addresses the urgent need for the development and use of pragmatic measures in school-based research and practice. In this overview article, we introduce key characteristics of pragmatic measures in school contexts and provide a historical and conceptual background of their use. Single-item measures are described in detail to illustrate the challenges and opportunities of pragmatic measurement in educational settings. The special issue features pragmatic measures of student stress and coping, school climate and student mental health, and observed teacher sentiment in classroom interactions. Collectively, these contributions highlight emerging trends, current gaps, and future directions for the development, evaluation, and contextual fit of pragmatic measures in school-based research and practice.
