Abstract:
Social determinants of health (SDOH) interact with structural inequities to create, perpetuate, and worsen disparities in surgical access, outcomes, and recovery. The 5 domains of SDOH include economic stability, education access and quality, health care access and quality, neighborhood and built environment, and social and community context. For each domain, we summarize key evidence linking social conditions to disparities in surgical care, illustrating how these interrelated structural forces influence surgical access and outcomes.
