Abstract:
This article focuses on the individual provider with a frame toward understanding medical mistrust in the historical context, exploring implicit bias in health care, and graduating toward upstanding against microaggressions. We encourage individuals to explore their own biases and trauma to better care for their patients and communities. We review trauma-informed care as a tool through which providers can improve their individual care by recognizing the lived experiences and feelings of patients. Finally, provider burnout and second victim syndrome, short behavioral intervention and referrals, and providers as advocates are discussed.
