    Summary

    Monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity in platelets did not differ between glaucoma patients and controls. However, women exhibited significantly higher MAO enzyme activity than men, regardless of ocular disease.

    Background:

    • Monoamine oxidase (MAO) is a key enzyme in neurotransmitter metabolism.
    • Altered MAO activity has been implicated in various neurological and ocular conditions.
    • Platelet MAO is a widely studied peripheral marker for central nervous system enzyme activity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate potential differences in platelet monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity in patients with glaucoma compared to healthy controls.
    • To explore the influence of sex and age on platelet MAO activity in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • Spectrophotofluorimetric assay was used to measure MAO activity.
    • The artificial substrate kynuramine was employed.
    • Platelet samples were obtained from 50 outpatients with glaucoma and 47 sex- and age-matched controls.
