Materials with spiral spin ordering always exhibit a rich phase diagram and can be a playground for studying the exotic physical properties associated with spiral magnetism. Using neutron elastic and resonant x-ray scattering on high-quality single crystal YBaCuFeO5, we demonstrate YBaCuFeO5as a helimagnet consisting of double-spiral spin ordering. YBaCuFeO5undergoes a commensurate-to-incommensurate (ICM) magnetic phase transition atTN2∼175 K, and the ICM phase consists of two spin-ordered components. Both components have different periodicities, but with the same propagating direction along thec-axis belowTN2. Using resonant x-ray scattering at the Fe and CuK-edges, we further demonstrate that both spiral spin orderings result from the Fe3+and Cu2+, respectively, forming a double-spiral spin ordering structure. This can be attributed to the coupling between the sublattices of Fe3+and Cu2+with the atomic lattice.

Qualitatively, any spin plus-half nucleus polarizes the spins of its electrons to the minus-half state. Consequently, the paired electron in the hydrogen–carbon bond must have a...
Spin–Spin Coupling: Two-Bond Coupling (Geminal Coupling)
The central atom need not be NMR-active because its electrons are affected by the electron polarization of the spin-active atoms. However, spin information is transmitted less effectively than in one-bond coupling, and 2J values are usually weaker than 1J values. The energy of...
