Construction and evaluation of an OSCE-based standardized training model for outpatient pharmacists: A single-center

Background:
Current standardized training for outpatient pharmacists often combines traditional theoretical lectures with clinical rotations, yet it lacks objective assessment of clinical practice competencies. Although Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) has been widely applied in medical education, systematic research in the field of pharmacist training remains limited.
Objective:
This study aims to develop a scenario-based teaching model utilizing OSCE and evaluate its effectiveness in the standardized training of outpatient pharmacists.
Methods:
A quasi-experimental pre-post design was employed, with 12 trainees from the 2022 cohort (Group A, traditional teaching) and 12 from the 2023 cohort (Group B, OSCE-based teaching). Training involved three stages and four OSCE assessment stations. Skill performance and comprehensive scores were compared, and satisfaction was surveyed.
Results:
OSCE scores were positively correlated with the results of the three-stage (Basic - Specialized - Overall) evaluation (r = 0.72, P = 0.008). Group B outperformed Group A in practical skills and comprehensive scores. Group B had a lower Pharmacy Administration score in the first assessment; targeted training improved all 4 stations. 91.67% of trainees found the OSCE model practical, with appropriate question difficulty and discrimination.
Conclusion:
This single-center study indicates that the application of the OSCE model in the standardized training of outpatient pharmacists is associated with enhanced clinical skills and knowledge application abilities, serving as a valuable assessment and teaching tool in this educational context.
