Purpose:
To investigate the safety and efficacy of Nd:YAG capsulotomy to treat posterior capsule opacification in eyes implanted with the IC-8 Apthera intraocular lens (IOL) (Bausch Surgical).
Methods:
This was a retrospective, non-randomized, single-center, consecutive clinical study of 69 patients implanted with the IC-8 IOL in the non-dominant eye, of whom 32 underwent capsulotomy. Data collected included visual outcomes of corrected and uncorrected distance, intermediate, and near vision (CDVA, UDVA, CIVA, UIVA, CNVA, UNVA), sphere, cylinder, and axis measurements, and slit-lamp photographs following capsulotomy to assess for damage.
Results:
Patients who underwent capsulotomy had significantly poorer mean CDVA following IC-8 implantation than those who did not (P = .0453). Following capsulotomy, mean CDVA (P = .0163), UDVA (P = .0275), and CIVA (P = .0432) improved significantly and CNVA improved (P = .1312). The efficacy index was 0.977 ± 0.593 and the safety index was 1.324 ± 0.643, MRSE was stable and predictable, and 88.5% of eyes had either gained or had no change in Snellen lines of CDVA. CDVA of 20/40 or better, UDVA of 20/50 or better, CIVA of N8 or better, and CNVA of N5 or better was achieved by all eyes, 80% of eyes achieved UIVA of N8 or better, and 80% of eyes achieved UNVA of N8 or better. Four IOLs had observable YAG-pits, which caused no significant effect on VA outcomes or subjective visual disturbances.
Conclusions:
The results demonstrated good VA, safety, and efficacy outcomes from Nd:YAG capsulotomy in IC-8 eyes, with no significant visual disturbance from YAG-pits.
