Treatment with osteopathic techniques for Meralgia Paresthetica: two case reports

Background:
Meralgia Paresthetica (MP) is a neuropathy of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN). Limited evidence exists to guide therapy selection. Current guidelines recommend conservative treatment as the initial approach. However, this was not implemented in the case reports presented.
Objectives:
These two clinical case reports aim to describe the application of osteopathic techniques (OT) in the management of Meralgia Paresthetica.
Clinical Features:
The first case involved a 61-year-old woman with a three-week history of symptoms. The second case involved a 48-year-old man with symptoms persisting for two months. Electromyographic examination in both cases confirmed a lesion of the LFCN. Previous non-conservative treatments were ineffective in alleviating symptoms.
Intervention And Outcomes:
In the first case, OT included neurodynamic mobilizations (glider and tensioner techniques), oscillatory techniques, and myofascial techniques. In the second case, OT comprised muscle energy technique, soft tissue, fascial and visceral techniques, neurodynamic exercise, and patient education. At follow-up, the first patient remained asymptomatic at one year, and the second patient at six months.
Conclusion:
These two case reports demonstrated the potential role of osteopathic techniques as a conservative treatment option for Meralgia Paresthetica.
