Purpose:
This study examined preferences for active and passive distraction methods among hospitalized children aged 6-12 years during needle-related invasive procedures.
Methods:
This descriptive cross-sectional study included 500 children aged 6-12 years, conducted between January 1, 2025, and January 2, 2026, in the pediatric clinics of a tertiary referral university hospital. The Child Information and Observation Form was used as a data collection tool. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression analyses were used in the data analysis.
Results:
Among the children (N = 500), 54.4% (n = 272) were aged 10-12 years, 52.0% (n = 260) were girls, and 52.0% had a chronic health condition. A statistically significant association was observed in distraction preferences (p < .001). Children aged 6-9 years were significantly more likely to prefer passive distraction compared to those aged 10-12 years (OR = 5.43, 95% CI [3.67, 8.02], p < .001) CONCLUSIONS: In this study, younger children more frequently preferred passive, low-cognitive-load distraction methods, whereas older children favor more active, interaction-based distraction methods.
Clinical Implications:
Distraction methods may be selected collaboratively with the child and family, taking into account age-related preference patterns.
