Purpose:
In this study, the aim was to assess the impact of the training program based on the Information-Motivation-Behavior Skills (IMB) model on adolescents with epilepsy's knowledge, attitude toward the disease, perceived social support, and seizure self-efficacy.
Design And Methods:
The study was conducted at a single center using a single-blind, randomized controlled, parallel-group experimental design. The IMB model-based training program was conducted between January and April 2024 with 42 adolescents with epilepsy who attended the outpatient clinic at one center. The sample size was calculated using power analysis, and participants were assigned to the intervention (n = 21) and control (n = 21) groups using block randomization. Research data were collected using the Informative Information Form, EpiTest-A, CATIS, MSPSS, and SSES-C. Adolescents in the intervention group received IMB model-based education in eight sessions over four weeks, while adolescents in the control group continued to receive routine care. Descriptive statistics, Pearson chi-square tests, independent samples t-tests, and repeated-measures ANOVA. The significance level was set at 0.05.
Results:
Following the educational programme, statistically significant increases were found in adolescents' information level, perceived social support, attitude toward the disease, and seizure self-efficacy.
Conclusion:
The training provided using the IMB model effectively increased adolescents' knowledge, perceived social support, attitude toward the disease, and seizure self-efficacy, contributing significantly to their disease management.
Implications For Practice:
These findings show that the IMB is a strong, practical model. It is advised to assess adolescents' knowledge, motivation, and behavioral skills to help manage their illness effectively, and to favor IMB-based training programs.
