Prostaglandin analogues in cosmetic products formulated for eyelash lengthening

Objectives:
The aim of this work is to investigate the presence of prostaglandin analogues in serums designed to promote eyelash growth.
Materials And Methods:
A qualitative study was carried out on 79 cosmetic products promising longer, thicker and/or fuller eyelashes. In this sample of products, we identified those that were formulated with prostaglandin analogues.
Results:
The serums studied are mainly hydroalcoholic solutions. About 30% of them contain a prostaglandin analogue. Six prostaglandin analogues were found, including bimatoprost and norbimatoprost. The most common are ethyl tafluprostamide, also known as dechloro dihydroxy difluoro ethyl cloprostenolamine (DDDE), and isopropyl cloprostenate. The other serums are formulated with harmless ingredients such as castor oil, amino acids, panthenol, peptides and peptide derivatives.
Conclusion:
Serums containing prostaglandin analogues are therefore available on the market and are promoted as eyelash growth treatments. They pose a number of problems as they are not regulated for use in cosmetic products.
