Dental Trauma with Pulpal Injury in Adults
1Department of Endodontics, University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA.
Abstract:
Traumatic dental injuries are common, particularly among children and young adults, with maxillary incisors most frequently affected. Injuries occurring during periods of active growth can significantly compromise tooth retention, alveolar development, and long-term esthetics, with physical and psychological consequences. Prompt recognition and management are essential, as outcomes depend heavily on timely intervention and appropriate treatment selection. Management strategies must balance immediate symptom relief with preservation of pulpal and periodontal health and consideration of future growth. Thoroughly understanding biological healing principles and adherence to evidence-based guidelines, like those from the International Association of Dental Traumatology, are critical to optimizing clinical outcomes.

Tooth Anatomy
The Crown, Neck, and Root
The visible part of the tooth is referred to as the crown. It's covered by enamel, the hardest substance in the human body. The crown is uniquely shaped for each type of tooth, allowing for different functions such as cutting, tearing, or grinding food.
Teeth
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin and...
