Abstract:
Modern surfactant delivery methods for surfactant deficiency in term and preterm infants include surfactant via thin catheter (STC), oropharyngeal, aerosol, and supraglottic device (SALSA). Only STC and SALSA are in current clinical use. As SALSA requires minimal airway skills and offers a safe and effective alternative to laryngoscopy, it can be adopted in diverse settings. We discuss implementation strategies to integrate SALSA into clinical practice in high resource and low-resource settings and address common challenges. Future directions to optimize surfactant delivery and make it widely accessible are also discussed.
