In this study, the influence of CeO2 morphology on catalytic oxidation performance of toluene was systematically investigated. CeO2 catalysts with distinct morphologies, including nanospheres, nanorods, nanoparticles, nano-octahedra, and nanocubes, were successfully synthesized via the hydrothermal methods and evaluated for catalytic oxidation of toluene. Among the investigated catalysts, the nanosphere-structured CeO2-S exhibited the highest catalytic activity, achieving 90% toluene conversion (T90) at 280 °C. Numerous characterization techniques were employed to elucidate the morphology-activity relationship. The N2 physisorption results revealed that morphology significantly affected the specific surface area of catalysts, and a positive correlation between specific surface area and catalytic activity was observed. The XPS and Raman analyses demonstrated that the concentration of oxygen vacancies depended on the catalyst morphology, and a higher oxygen vacancy concentration contributed positively to catalytic performance. The in situ DRIFTS revealed the reaction pathway of toluene oxidation, in which adsorbed toluene was sequentially converted into intermediates such as benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, and maleic anhydride, followed by complete oxidation into CO2 and H2O. Overall, this work provided insights into CeO2 catalysts with different morphologies and offered guidance for the design of highly efficient catalysts for VOCs oxidation.

Regioselectivity and Stereochemistry of Hydroboration
Hydroboration proceeds in a concerted fashion with the attack of borane on the π bond, giving a cyclic four-centered transition state. The –BH2 group is bonded to the less substituted carbon and –H to the more substituted carbon. The concerted nature requires the simultaneous addition of –H and –BH2 across the same face of the alkene giving syn stereochemistry.
