The Social Amplification of Secondary Risk Perceptions: Online Media Attention, Interpersonal Discussion, and Dengue
1School of Journalism and Communication, Peking University, Beijing, China.
Abstract:
Drawing on a combined perspective integrating the social amplification of risk framework and secondary risk theory, we examined the ways in which people's online attention and interpersonal discussion shape their perceptions of secondary risks related to the dengue vaccine, as well as how these perceptions subsequently impact their willingness to receive the vaccine. Data were collected through an online survey (N = 1,001) using quota sampling methods. The findings indicated that interpersonal discussions had a positive connection to individuals' perceptions of both the severity and susceptibility of secondary risks, and both of these perceptual factors were inversely linked to vaccination willingness. However, online attention did not have a direct influence on secondary risk perceptions, but rather an indirect influence, via interpersonal discussions. Findings further indicated that secondary risk perceptions play an important mediating role in the relationship between offline discussions and vaccination willingness. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
