Perioperative Applications of Electrical Stimulation in Flap Surgeries: Mechanisms and Benefits

Objective:
To review the roles and applications of electrical stimulation in flap transplantation, addressing its potential to reduce flap necrosis.
Data Sources:
Medical textbooks and a literature search were conducted in databases including PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and relevant surgical journals.
Study Selection:
Articles were screened using keywords including electrical stimulation, flap transplantation, angiogenesis, vasodilation, antibacterial, vasopasm, inflammation, wound healing, cell migration, and cell proliferation. Articles in which the title and/or abstract contained these key words were included in the review. More than 120 journal research articles met the criteria.
Data Extraction:
Research highlighted the benefits and molecular mechanisms of electrical stimulation on the healing progress of flap transplantation, which underwent a full-text review and summarization.
Data Synthesis:
Classify and descriptively summarize the articles based on perioperative factors closely related to flap survival. The mechanisms underlying these benefits are discussed, alongside their clinical significance.
Conclusions:
Preoperative electrical stimulation fosters angiogenesis and new blood vessel growth, whereas postoperative stimulation aids in infection control, edema reduction, and overall wound healing. Electrical stimulation shows significant promise in improving outcomes of flap surgeries.
