Spatial flows of urban carbon sequestration services in Chinese urban agglomerations

Abstract:
Urban agglomerations regulate the balance between carbon sequestration supply and demand. This study examines carbon sequestration service flows across 19 Chinese urban agglomerations from 2000 to 2020 by integrating supply-demand assessment with circuit theory-based flow modeling. Carbon supply increased moderately, whereas demand rose rapidly, leading to persistent spatial imbalances. Supply is higher in western and southern regions, while demand concentrates in major eastern urban clusters. More than half of the agglomerations show supply surplus, whereas others remain balanced or deficit. Flow simulations reveal network structures in which ecological supply areas surround urban demand centers, with well-connected corridors in central and western regions and fragmented networks in the east. These results highlight the role of spatial connectivity in regulating ecosystem service redistribution and provide a basis for cross-regional ecological compensation and coordinated carbon governance.
