Ethical Issues

Nurses are essential in patient care, upholding the ethical principles of their profession and effectively navigating ethical dilemmas. Neglecting ethical issues can lead to inadequate patient care, compromised therapeutic relationships, and moral distress among healthcare workers.

Current Trends in Nursing II

Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Nursing Code of Ethics01:29

Nursing Code of Ethics

The Nursing Code of Ethics sets the ethical benchmark for the profession, and guides nurses in ethical analysis and decision making at the societal, organizational, and clinical levels. The code encompasses showing compassion and respect for the patient, their families, and communities in all circumstances while committing to providing patient-centered care. In addition, the code states that nurses must advocate for the patient by defending a cause or recommendation to protect their rights,...
Nurses' Legal Responsibilities III01:16

Nurses' Legal Responsibilities III

Nurse-to-nurse relationships are legally required to adhere to professional standards, ensuring a respectful and positive working environment. Professional conduct demands that nurses treat all colleagues respectfully and courteously, fostering a productive, supportive workplace. Nurses must actively eliminate bullying, discrimination, and harassment to maintain a safe and inclusive environment.
Cultivating a culture of collaboration and mutual respect among nurses transcends mere enhancement...
Obedience01:08

Obedience

According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation, obedience...

Using Visual and Narrative Methods to Achieve Fair Process in Clinical Care

Published on: February 16, 2011

Area of Science:

  • Nursing
  • Healthcare Disparities
  • Workplace Psychology

Background:

  • A national survey indicates most US Registered Nurses (RNs) experience workplace racism from patients, colleagues, and leaders.
  • Racial microaggressions, subtle forms of racism, negatively impact nurses' health, performance, and patient safety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review literature on US nurses' workplace experiences with racial microaggressions.
  • To identify the impact of these microaggressions on nurses and patient care.

Main Methods:

  • A scoping review of PubMed and CINAHL databases was conducted.
  • Included studies focused on nurses' workplace experiences with bias and discrimination in the US, from inception to November 2024.

Main Results:

  • Eleven studies met inclusion criteria (7 qualitative, 3 quantitative, 1 mixed-methods).
  • Themes included experiencing microaggressions, impacts on nurses (well-being, morale), responses, effects on patient care, and recommendations.
  • Nurses of color faced racial microaggressions, including patient refusal of care, impacting their emotional resources and patient safety.

Conclusions:

  • Racial microaggressions are prevalent in nursing workplaces, affecting nurses' well-being, job satisfaction, and patient care.
  • Systemic approaches are crucial to address microaggressions and support a diverse nursing workforce during shortages.
