Until recently, the main cause of concern for those involved with malaria elimination was the emergence of insecticide and drug resistance. However, since the withdrawal of USA funding for malaria control, as well as dwindling foreign aid budgets of European countries, the additional concern that now exists is of a lack of finance in support of that work. This paper sets out to remind that with only limited finance and without reliance on insecticides, drugs or bednets, the launch took place of successful sustainable malaria control as far back as 1922, and the principles which were then applied are available for use elsewhere.
