Mortality among young adults in intensive care unit diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection

Objectives:
to characterize young adults admitted to Intensive Care Units due to SARS-CoV-2 infection regarding demographic and clinical data and risk factors for mortality.
Methods:
quantitative, longitudinal, retrospective, and analytical research involving 105 adult patients, aged 20 to 40, in intensive care after confirmed SARS-CoV-2. It was conducted at a university hospital in São Paulo between April 2021 and December 2022.
Results:
the mortality rate was 27.6%. Sex, ethnicity, emergency room origin, hemodynamic instability, and vasoactive drug, mechanical ventilation, prophylactic heparin, and corticosteroids use were associated with mortality. Associated markers were C-reactive protein, lactate, and lymphocytes. Risk factors included increased lactate and days of vasoactive drug use.
Conclusions:
it was possible to outline the demographic and clinical profile of young adults admitted to the Intensive Care Unit due to COVID-19, and to know the variables predicting mortality in this population.
