This pilot study shows tele-exercise is feasible for breast cancer survivors, improving fitness and quality of life. Further research is needed to confirm long-term benefits.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Breast cancer is a leading global cancer in women.
  • Adjuvant therapies for breast cancer can negatively impact physical and mental health.
  • Many breast cancer survivors are not active enough to mitigate treatment side effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility and acceptability of a 7-week tele-exercise program for breast cancer survivors in Hong Kong.
  • To gather preliminary data on the effectiveness of tele-exercise for improving health outcomes in this population.
  • To inform the design of a larger, longer-term trial.

Main Methods:

  • A 7-week, theory-informed, group-based tele-exercise intervention was adapted from a 12-week program.
  • A 2-group randomized controlled pilot trial included 27 breast cancer survivors.

  • The intervention combined supervised and unsupervised tele-exercise sessions with psychological counseling, guided by the RE-AIM framework.
  • Main Results:

    • High recruitment (79.4%) and retention (100%) rates were achieved.
    • The intervention group demonstrated satisfactory attendance (87.7%) and compliance (85.3%).
    • Preliminary improvements were noted in cardiorespiratory fitness, strength, balance, shoulder range of motion, and quality of life.

    Conclusions:

    • Tele-exercise is a feasible and acceptable intervention for breast cancer survivors.
    • The pilot study provides preliminary evidence supporting tele-exercise for cancer rehabilitation.
    • Results justify a larger trial to evaluate sustained effects and wider applicability.
