Measurement of Mid-Shaft Border Distances in Adult Human Fibulae within the Bangladeshi Population

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to measure different parameters of the distance between mid-shaft borders of fibula. This cross-sectional descriptive study was taken from 300 (152 right and 148 left) samples those were selected through the purposive sampling technique which was carried out in the Department of Anatomy, Mymensingh Medical College Mymensingh, Bangladesh from January 2023 to December 2023. These fibulae bones having any pathology, damaged, unossified and fractured bones were excluded from this study. Data of this osteometrical study were tabulated and statistically analyzed by using Microsoft Excel and SPSS software. The mean ±SD of distance between anterior and medial border at mid-point of the shaft was 6.09±1.34 mm on right side and 6.20±1.68 mm on left side. The mean ±SD of distance between anterior and posterior border at mid-point of the shaft was 14.25±1.69 mm on right side and 14.01±1.78 mm on left side. The mean ±SD of distance between medial and posterior border at mid-point of the shaft was 12.92±2.00 mm on right side and 13.17±1.95 mm on left side. The measurements of distance between different borders (Anterior, Posterior and Interosseous) of the shaft of the fibula are important primarily as anatomical anchor points for musculofascial compartments, muscular attachment and as boundaries for identifying safe zones during surgical procedures. This anatomical knowledge is also important for separating the anterior, lateral and posterior compartments of the leg, which is essential for diagnosing compartment syndrome. As the compartment syndrome is a surgical procedures called fasciotomy so the precise understanding of fascial boundaries, neurovascular structures and muscular compartments determines the success of treatment and prevents permanent disability.
