Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize physical activity (PA) and sleep patterns in adults with IBD in Puerto Rico.
  • To identify potential correlations between PA, sleep, and body mass index (BMI) in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Forty-eight adults with IBD (73% Crohn's disease, 27% ulcerative colitis) participated.
  • Accelerometers assessed PA and sleep for 7 days.
  • Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire were administered to a subsample.

Main Results:

  • Participants generally met PA recommendations (≥150 min/week) but had short sleep durations.
  • No significant differences in PA or sleep were found between Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis patients.
  • Sleep duration was inversely correlated with BMI, and PA was positively correlated with BMI; men reported more sleep interruptions.

Conclusions:

  • Adults with IBD in this cohort were often overweight, physically active, and sleep-deprived.
  • PA, sleep duration, and BMI monitoring can guide personalized health interventions for IBD patients.
  • Further research is needed to explore the complex interplay between PA, sleep, BMI, and IBD management.
