  • To assess the coverage and characteristics of home health care (HHC) agencies in Puerto Rico (PR).
  • To compare HHC agencies in PR with those in the continental U.S. (excluding PR) and specific U.S. counties with high Puerto Rican populations (CHPRPs).

Main Methods:

  • Utilized 2020 U.S. Census ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) data and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) files for PR HHC coverage mapping.
  • Calculated descriptive statistics for HHC agencies, patients, and Medicare beneficiaries using publicly available CMS data.
  • Employed Pearson's χ2, Fisher's exact, and t tests for comparative analysis between PR, U.S. (excluding PR), and CHPRP agencies.

  • Opportunities exist to enhance patient experience and preventive care services within PR's HHC sector.
  • Further research is recommended to explore the factors behind these observed differences and to investigate Medicare Advantage (MA) enrollee access to and utilization of HHC services.
