Clinical Evaluation of a Magnesium-based Barrier Membrane for Guided Bone Regeneration

Background/Aim:
Resorbable magnesium (Mg) membranes have been introduced for guided bone regeneration (GBR) to provide space maintenance without removal surgery. This prospective observational study evaluated clinical outcomes and postoperative events after GBR using a Mg membrane (NOVAMag®) with optional Mg screw fixation.
Patients And Methods:
In a single-center cohort, 126 patients underwent 195 GBR-related procedures using a pure Mg membrane with optional Mg fixation screws. Follow-ups were performed up to three months. Outcomes included treatment success, wound dehiscence, clinically evident gas accumulation, and patient-reported recovery (pain/swelling duration).
Results:
Treatment success was 94.9%. Gas accumulation occurred in 6.2% overall. Wound dehiscence occurred in 10.5%. Mean pain and swelling duration were 4.6 and 4.5 days (median 3 days each).
Conclusion:
NOVAMag® enabled GBR with high treatment success and short symptomatic recovery, with manageable rates of postoperative gas accumulation and wound dehiscence in this observational cohort.
