The external clinical teaching visit: GP supervisor engagement and perceptions of utility

1MBBS, FRACGP, MPH@TM, Medical Educator, GP Synergy, NSW; General Practitioner, Elermore Vale General Practice, NSW.
Background And Objectives:
External clinical teaching visits (ECTVs) involve direct observation of general practice registrar consultations with patients, performed by independent general practitioner (GP) educators. The aim of this study was to describe engagement with, and perceived utility of, ECTVs by GP supervisors.
Method:
GP supervisors completed an anonymous online survey.
Results:
Over 80% of 343 respondents, with representation across all Australian states/territories and ruralities, reported high levels of engagement with ECTVs, for example discussing the ECTV with the visitor. Most GP supervisors thought that ECTVs were useful across a range of practice domains, particularly those who also perform ECTVs. Themes emerging from free-text responses highlighted the value of ECTVs as a teaching and assessment tool but also barriers to achieving their full educational utility.
Discussion:
GP supervisors are highly engaged with ECTVs and find them useful. Targeted training of GP supervisors and visitors may further optimise the educational value of ECTVs.
