In adults, a broad network of brain regions supports memory performance. Development of these brain regions, and their connections, are thought to underlie age-related improvements in this cognitive ability. In this Review, we summarize empirical research examining relations between macrostructure, microstructure and function of the developing brain and the resulting impact on memory in children and adolescents. Our synthesis suggests measures of microstructure and function (including functional connectivity) provide greater insight into developmental changes in memory compared to measures of macrostructure. Moreover, we describe both the qualitative and quantitative nature of these developmental changes, highlight the importance of individual differences and identify directions for future studies.
