Normative Data for Inner Macular Optical Coherence Tomography Parameters in a Cohort of Egyptian Population

Purpose:
To analyze, in an Egyptian cohort, the data of inner macular optical coherence tomography (OCT) parameters in the three inner macular layers; inner plexiform layer (IPL), ganglion cell layer (GCL), and retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) with special interest in the range for values regarding the difference in thickness between upper and lower halves of the inner macular layers.
Methods:
The study included 103 candidates (199 eyes), with thorough ophthalmic examination, and OCT was done by the use of Glaucoma Module Premium Edition of Spectralis (Heidelberg Engineering). The deviation maps were divided into upper and lower halves. The data for the difference between them were analyzed.
Results:
The range of values for the macular GCL was from 89 to 192 μm in the upper half of the deviation map (mean: 155 ± 14.347 μm standard deviation [SD]), and values for the lower half were with a mean of 157 ± 13.834 SD. The interquartile range (IQR) for the difference between the upper and lower halves was from -5 to 1 μm. In the macular RNFL, the IQR for the difference between the upper and lower halves of deviation maps was from -5 to 2 μm (range, -17 to 12 μm). For the IPL, the IQR was from -2 to 1 μm.
Conclusion:
Normative parameters from inner macular layers are new parameters that could be added to the OCT parameters utilized in the early diagnosis of glaucoma.
