Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate population access to community pharmacies by race and ethnicity.
  • To assess the association between pharmacy access and medication use.
  • To determine the impact of pharmacy access on racial and ethnic disparities in medication use.

Main Methods:

  • Population proximity to community pharmacies (10-minute drive time) was estimated by county, race, and ethnicity (2010-2023).
  • Pharmacy access measures were linked to state-level medication use data (27 conditions) by race/ethnicity (through 2019).
  • Statistical analysis examined the relationship between pharmacy access and medication use per prevalent case and disparities.

Main Results:

  • A 1% increase in population within a 10-minute drive of a pharmacy correlated with a 0.7% increase in medication use per case.
  • This positive association was most pronounced for Asian/Pacific Islander, Black, and Hispanic populations.
  • A 1% increase in pharmacy access was linked to a 0.52% decrease in racial and ethnic disparities in medication use.

Conclusions:

  • Uneven community pharmacy access may exacerbate racial and ethnic disparities in medication use.
  • Policies aimed at improving medication access should prioritize underserved communities.
  • Targeted interventions to maintain or expand pharmacy presence are recommended for health equity.
