Abstract:
To explore the mechanisms underlying English learners' learning engagement (LE), a multidimensional construct encompassing behavioral, emotional, and cognitive investment in language learning activities, this study constructed a moderated mediation model to examine the impact of pro-environmental behavior (PEB) on university students' English LE, as well as the mediating role of learning gains (LG) and the moderating role of subjective well-being (SWB) in this relationship. A questionnaire survey was administered to 1354 college students from a university in Shanxi Province, China. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis, mediation analysis, and moderated mediation analysis with SPSS 27.0 and PROCESS 4.0. The results indicated a significant positive correlation between PEB and LE, LG, and SWB respectively. Moreover, mutual positive correlations were observed among LE, LG, and SWB. Further analysis revealed that LG partially mediated the association between PEB and LE, and SWB played a moderating role in the pathway from PEB to LE. Specifically, PEB positively predicted college students' LE, with this predictive effect being mediated by LG and moderated by SWB.
