Abstract:
Smekal et al. (2026) extrastriate body area (EBA) meta-analysis finds large variability in anatomical and response properties-attributed mainly to stimulus and task differences. They argue for using dynamic stimulation for increasing data signal-to-noise, proposing a standardized EBA functional localizer for unmasking individual differences. I note that partially occluded bodies are also ecologically valid. Here I re-present older data using dynamic bodies, legs and hands, which includes testing with identical motion profiles, but altered spatial locations. This would separate a whole dynamic body EBA from regions selective for dynamic body parts, a (temporo-parietal) distinction with potential clinical implications e.g. for the Apraxias.
