Adaptation of the Communication Patterns Questionnaire (CPQ) for Spanish-speaking populations

The Communication Patterns Questionnaire (CPQ), which assesses couples' interaction patterns in the face of conflict, has been cross-culturally validated. However, a complete version of this instrument in Spanish is not available yet. The aim of this study was to adapt the CPQ into Spanish and analyze its psychometric properties. The CPQ was translated using a translation and back-translation process. The data came from a Spanish sample (N = 536) and a Mexican sample (N = 564). A factor analysis was performed based on the model proposed by Crenshaw et al. (2017). Similarly, invariance analyses were performed for both sex and country. Likewise, correlations between subscales by sex were analyzed, as well as correlations with other related outcomes, such as commitment and satisfaction, and the reliability of the instrument was verified. After removing two items and adding covariances between complementary items, the data from both countries show a good fit to the explicit factor model: comparative fit index = .954; root-mean-square error of approximation = .056. Residual correlations were small overall, with the largest at .20. The criteria for invariance by sex and country were satisfied. All sex correlations among the subscales and almost all of those carried out between them and related outcomes were significant and in the expected direction, most of them being moderate in magnitude. Finally, these subscales reflected adequate internal consistency. The Spanish adaptation of the CPQ shows satisfactory psychometric indicators, and this study provides a new valid and reliable instrument for assessing couple dynamics in the Spanish-speaking context.
