Case Series: Real-Life Experience with Vitex Agnus-Castus Extract Ze 440 Medication in Adolescents
1Health at the Center, Geneva, Switzerland, kathrin.erkert@aiz.ch.
Introduction:
Menstrual disorders are common in adolescents and can significantly impact quality of life. Nonhormonal treatment options are of particular interest in this population, especially for those not requiring contraception. Vitex agnus-castus (VAC) extract Ze 440 is a well-established phytotherapeutic agent shown to be effective in adult women, though clinical data in adolescents remain limited.
Methods:
This case series presents real-life clinical experience with Ze 440 in 6 adolescent patients aged 12-17 years with various menstrual disorders. Patients were followed in routine clinical practice for up to 6 months.
Results:
Treatment with Ze 440 demonstrated good efficacy in relieving dysmenorrhea and stabilizing the menstrual cycle. In several cases, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) could be reduced or discontinued. Two patients with pronounced hypermenorrhea required additional therapy with tranexamic acid; one of them was switched to norethisterone after 6 months due to poor tolerance of tranexamic acid. Ze 440 was well tolerated, and no adverse events were reported.
Conclusion:
Ze 440 appears to be a practical, well tolerated, nonhormonal option for managing menstrual disorders in adolescents. It supports the natural menstrual cycle without hormonal suppression. Regular clinical follow-up is recommended to optimize treatment outcomes and adjust therapy as needed.
